Beef and Potato Casserole

A warming meal which is perfect for the whole family.


  • 850g braising steak
  • 400g new potatoes, chopped in half
  • 3 carrots, sliced
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 beef stock cubes
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 sprigs of thyme
  • salt and pepper
  • 600ml hot water

Step 1

Heat oven to 160°C/ 140°F fan/ gas mark 3.

Step 2

Heat the vegetable oil in a large fry pan and add in the braising beef. Cook for 5 minutes until the beef starts to brown.

Step 3

Remove the fry pan from the heat and carefully tip the beef into a Mason Cash Classic Collection Casserole dish.

Step 4

Add the rest of the ingredients to the casserole dish apart from 1 sprig of thyme (this will be used as a garnish later) and stir.

Step 5

Gradually pour 600ml of just boiled water into the casserole dish and stir well.

Step 6

Place the lid on the casserole dish and cook in the oven for 2 ½ hours. After this time remove the lid and cook for a further hour until the meat is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.

Step 7

Step 7 – Stir once more, then garnish with a sprig of thyme.
