Icing Nozzles Chart
Decorating a cake is an art that can truly elevate the final presentation. One of the key tools in cake decoration is piping nozzles. These small but significant accessories determine the design and texture of your icing, allowing you to create beautiful patterns and intricate details.
Icing sets like our Mason Cash Icing Syringe Set come with 6 different types of nozzles, but if you’re a novice at icing you may not know which one to choose to get the pattern you want. With the wide array of piping nozzles available on the market, it can be overwhelming to select the right ones for your needs. Here’s our handy visual guide to each type of piping tip.
Which icing nozzles should I use?
Piping nozzles come in various shapes and sizes, each designed to achieve a specific effect. Familiarize yourself with the different types to better understand their purposes:
Round Nozzles
Ideal for creating outlines, lettering, and basic piping techniques. They come in different sizes, allowing you to control the thickness of your lines. If you want to add dots or outlines of flowers to your cake, choose a round icing nozzle.

Star Nozzles
These nozzles have multiple points and are great for creating stars, shells, rosettes, and textured designs. Star nozzles are popular for icing cupcakes, piping borders around the base of a cake and piping buttercream kisses on top of cakes. The shell-like dollops of buttercream icing add a lovely border at the bottom of your cake.

Petal or Ruffle Nozzles
As the name suggests, these nozzles are used to create flower petals, ruffles, and other delicate floral designs.
To create an icing petal, hold your icing bag with the tips wide end facing down, and squeeze while pivoting the narrow end to the right and releasing pressure.
To create a ruffle border, hold your icing bag with the tips wide end down and pipe from left to right in a zigzag pattern.

Leaf Piping Nozzles
These nozzles are used to create realistic-looking leaves on cupcakes and cakes. Fill your bag with royal icing or buttercream and finish off your beautiful roses with some leaves piped onto the corners. They're handy to have and quick to pipe.

Ball Tip Nozzle
A ball tip icing nozzle, also known as a ball tip decorating nozzle or ball tip piping tip, is a specialized tool used in cake decorating and pastry work. It is designed specifically for creating decorative designs, patterns, and borders with icing, frosting, or whipped cream.

What nozzle to use for icing cupcakes?
Medium sized star nozzles are often used to pipe icing onto cupcakes.
The open star nozzle (the ends point straight) creates a swirled design with ridges and a defined centre. It's perfect for creating a classic cupcake swirl or rosettes. The ridges give the icing a textured and decorative look.
The closed star nozzle (the ends curve inwards) creates a similar swirled effect but with a different texture. It produces a smoother, more defined centre and slightly different ridges. This nozzle is often used for creating larger, more dramatic swirls.
Both the open star and closed star nozzles are great options for icing cupcakes and can give your cupcakes a professional and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
What’s the difference between 1M 2D nozzles?
The main difference between the 1M and 2D nozzles lies in the size and shape of the designs they create when piping buttercream. The 1M nozzle creates larger, open star-shaped designs, while the 2D nozzle creates flatter, closed star-shaped designs with a more compact arrangement of petals. Both nozzles have their unique applications and can be used to achieve different decorative effects when piping buttercream.
